Obviously I do not know if all of your gay male friends practice serial monogamy, but I have read the non-fictitious book “28: Stories of AIDS in Africa” by Stephanie Nolen (probably the best book I can think of with a female author) and the stories of the twenty-eight people profiled in that book would give any male reason to pause before having male homosexual sex, even though only one of the people profiled (Zackie Achmat) is a gay man. Antiretrovirals are not free and they lose their efficacy every few years even when taken properly. People have died only six months after starting antiretroviral therapy, so while some people have been brought back from CD4 counts of only one or two to live many years afterwards with the virus, others have died sooner despite having started the drugs before their CD4 counts got as low as one or two. People who have tested positive for HIV have contemplated or attempted suicide after their diagnosis, as HIV infection would understandably destroy an individual’s mental health.
